Soon enough, he accomplished just that and Hopkins became his mentor, giving him the name "Long Gone" and the encouragement to perform on the Texas club circuit. Miles also sang on several of Hopkins' late 's recordings. In , Miles again relocated, this time to Los Angeles. He recorded a series of 45s with guitarist Brownie McGhee and harmonica player Sonny Terry, further establishing his reputation. The following year, he teamed up with guitarist Willie Chambers, who he would perform with regularly during and , often at Sugar Hill in San Francisco and at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles, two West Coast venues that developed strong affiliations with the blues artists of the era.
The first album recorded under his own name, Country Born was a colorful mix of the swampy sounds he grew up on in Louisiana mixed with Lightnin' Hopkins unique form of Texas flavored country blues.
This remarkable live recording of Long Gone Miles at the Ash Grove in is a wonderful example of his engaging personality and highly expressive vocal power. This recording is also notable for the inclusion of a young Bernie Pearl, who accompanies Long Gone Miles on acoustic guitar throughout the set. However, my husband and I find th Brownie the little girl and Pearl her cat drive their toy car to somebody's mailbox, get the mail, and then give the mail to somebody to whom it may or may not have belonged before returning home. However, my husband and I find the lack of parental supervision is somewhat disturbing.

Oct 05, Alice rated it really liked it. As a kid, I would have loved to have my own little car. I was jeolous of the kids that had those battery powered car. And think, Brownie has one and it has room for her cat. Great early reader for little girls. The pictures are absolutely adorable, the story is cute, and I think I love Brownie and Pearl.
Brownie is a girly girl no doubt but she still is up for an adventure! Really liked this one! Dec 26, Rebecca rated it it was ok Shelves: easy-reader. Cute illustrations and a car with a special seat for a cat--so I should like this book. But I am not sure about depicting Pearl and Brownie getting mail from a random mailbox and "delivering" some and tossing the rest out of the car.
It is so cute at the end when Brownie has to get snacks to get Pearl to come out of the car. Just wish Rylant had come up with something better than vandalism for the characters to do while they were in the car. Jun 01, Jean Odom rated it it was amazing Shelves: sabrina. My daughter has all of the Brownie and Pearl books.
Although she is almost 10 now and has graduated to reading long novels, she still loves the beautiful pictures and sweet stories of the Brownie and Pearl series. We had many a wonderful story time before bed reading them and they are a treasured collection. Mar 24, Marcie rated it liked it Shelves: beginning-reader. I'll have to see more in this series.

This one is a problem because I'm not sure kids can relate to a mailbox and certainly not getting lots of mail. It is interesting that in the illustrations all the mail is postcards and letters. Do kids know what postcards are? Is the term take out synonymous with "fast food"? Apr 30, Robin rated it liked it Shelves: adventure , contemporary-fiction , picture-books. The plot was disjointed and the "takeout" punchline required a lot of explaining. Apr 25, E. Apr 13, Anne rated it it was ok. A disappointing entry in this series.
