I wanted my daughters to hear about girls who saved the day Q: Abby in Wonderland is a special edition! How is it different from the rest of the series? Also, this time Abby falls into the story with her three best friends instead of her brother. The special edition is also longer than my other Whatever Afters and includes fun and games like writing prompts and a Q and A. I would tell him not to worry—one day he and Abby will fall into Jack and the Beanstalk. Q: Besides Abby, who was your favorite character to write in Abby in Wonderland?

I also enjoyed writing Penny, who we see a lot more of in A bby in Wonderland than we usually do. It was challenging but fun to explore her dynamic with Abby, and to play them off of each other. I mean, The Princess and the Pea. Two Peas in a Pod will be out this spring! For more from Sarah Mlynowski, be sure to check out our podcast episode all about fractured fairytales!

But why do those stories have so much appeal? We know kids love fairy tales — the magic, adventure, beautiful princesses and dashing heroes. To celebrate the new film adaptation of Cinderella releasing today, we are thrilled to have New York Times bestselling author Sarah Mlynowski join us to answer a few questions about Cinderella, her take on fairy tales, and more. I had the idea for Whatever After way back when I was a kid. I loved fractured fairy tales even as a six-year-old. I was not a fan of vegetables.
And while I loved fairy tales, I was also not a fan of the save-the-damsel in-distress endings. I decided Whatever After was my chance to inject them with humor and girl power. Oh boy. If, like Cinderella, you had a fairy godmother for one night, what would you ask for? It has an actual ticking clock! How do I get an invitation to one of those exactly?
Originally from Montreal, Sarah now lives in the kingdom of Manhattan with her very own prince charming and their fairy-tale loving daughters. Sarah is a bestselling author and has received glowing reviews from numerous publications including Justine Magazine and Kirkus Reviews. Her latest fairy tale, Cold as Ice , which is based on the story of the Snow Queen, has just been released and is perfect for the upcoming winter months! Take it away Sarah!
Can you tell us a little bit about how you got the idea for the Whatever After series? When I was a kid, I used to write stories. A lot of stories. I had two favorite kinds. The first were about a little girl named Sarah who lived in Montreal, just like I did, but magic stuff happened to her. Like she had a magic umbrella that could carry her around the city, or a magic fork that could turn vegetables into chocolate.
The second kind of stories I wrote were fractured fairy tales. A few years ago, I found all my stories in a red storage box. What if a regular girl magically fell into a fairy tale and fractured it? What are your favorite and least favorite things about winter? My least favorite things about winter are: chapped lips, cold ears, cold noses, cold feet, hail, and slipping on the ice and bruising my behind.
Which I seem to do all the time. My favorite things about winter are: earmuffs, cozy socks, my birthday, snowflakes, snow angels, snow days, and sitting by the fire and drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows. Lots and lots of marshmallows. The Little Mermaid. Do you know what happens at the end of the original story? Is that not the saddest ending ever?
