Spreading the word about apprenticeships
Skilled workers had to have at least three months of employment experience, apprentices at least half a year, and common laborers at least a year. Official ecoles de coiffure, run by the municipalities or the syndicate, turned out debutants by the thousands, and individual coiffeurs occasionally trained their own apprentices. Many testators were in their dotage, of course, but a good proportion died young, still apprenticed, perhaps mentioning parents, siblings and, sometimes, a betrothed.
